Drink Drive Limit
Just one glass could make you unfit
A pint of beer or a glass of wine could soon be enough to put motorists over the limit.
Big changes to the laws on drink and drug-driving are expected after a top level review was ordered yesterday.
A legal expert, has been asked to report by March on lowering the legal drink-drive limit to 50mg from the current level.
The new limit would mean that an average-sized adult drinking a glass and a half of wine or a pint of beer would be legally unable to drive. Slight women would be able to drink less.
On drug-driving, it is already illegal to drive while impaired by a drug. But a new offence might be created to cover named drugs and specify levels.
Transport Secretary Lord Adonis wants him to advise on whether to cut the drink-drive limit or create a new, lower limit with penalties less severe than the current minimum 12 months ban, up to six months jail and a fine up to £5,000.
