Footage showing a van driver on the M25 'tailgating' a police car less than 1ft (30cm) away has been released.

Essex Police is using the video, filmed on the M25 at Epping, as part of a road safety operation targeting inconsiderate drivers.

The force said the operation was aimed at "bullying tailgaters" and "impatient drivers who undertake".

The van driver in the video, who took both hands off the wheel to make gestures, was given a penalty ticket.

He had been in the outside lane behind the police car travelling at 70 mph.

Sgt Simon Wilsher said impatient drivers "trying to bully" people could be prosecuted for dangerous driving.

"Poor driving behaviour features as a factor within many road traffic collisions which all too often lead to fatal or serious injuries," he said.

Under new government measures, motorists caught driving poorly, including tailgating, will be given on-the-spot penalties.  Further details can be seen on Channel 5 News video shown on 5th June 2013.
